The Spring House - Aka "Little White House Creative"

The Spring House - Aka "Little White House Creative"

Okay, we have learned a bit more about what we call have been calling the Spring House. This space was one of the main things that I fell in love with about the house.  I'm a sucker for history and all things old, so this had my heart.  We thought it was originally a true spring house, where water was accessed, but after speaking with neighbors that have been in the area for many decades, it appears as if the structure was used as more of a root and food storage and prep type space.  The dug out sunken floors kept the items stored within it cooler, as the earth naturally provided a refrigeration of sorts.  This makes sense as the land was used for crops and dairy. The yields would preserve better here.

We wanted to keep it from falling in further disrepair and I have really wanted to use the space as an office or creative space.  When we first moved in, we put a new roof on it in order to give it a bit of a chance at survival until we had the opportunity to restore it.  Once we went in and started work to restore, we realized there was too much rot and termite damage to salvage.  We were going to rebuild with the sunken floor, but really, it made most sense to build up a floor to regular ground level and start from scratch.
Here are some "before pictures":

The stone was below ground - the walls started at ground level.

Once we removed the shelves, we realized how damaged the blue painted pine planks were we realized we couldn't save them.  And once we removed the blue pine, we really understood better the termite damage.  It was barely standing up still.

So... tear down :(

And the rebuild:

Here's the INSPO for what I'm going for:

I'm hoping for a sunlit bright spot to do whatever it is that I'm going to be doing come 2026! I hope to update in a couple of weeks with all sorts of news! ;)

XOXO-

Jenny
