What's in a Name? Why "The Little White House"?

What's in a Name? Why "The Little White House"?

Each house I've worked on or owned has a feel, a vibe, a personality.  Finding the vibe of the Little White House came pretty quickly.  It stemmed from the love and experience all 4 of us had at my families home in Southern Alabama.
The house was in Magnolia Springs, AL on land that spilled into The Magnolia River and was built in late 1800s.  My dad grew up there, as it was his grand parents house. My great grandfather hand grafted all the camellias that to this day bloom on the property right there in his greenhouse.  My parents bought the house and property in the 80s after it slipped out of the family for a bit, when I was 13.  We lived in it during summers and holidays for a few years before my parents started a massive renovation of it and the other homes that resided on the property in the 90s.  It became their primary home around that time.
There was "The big house" - the main house, a "river house" (which became my oldest brothers house), the old garage (which became 2 separate 3br "apartments") - my other brother got the upstairs, and I got the down stairs.  There was also a pool house and a boathouse.  My son was born there in the little downstairs apartment, and spent mornings in "The Big House" having pancakes with his cousins and grandparents. Both my kids spent their early days running around the property, among their great-great grandfather's camellias.  The apartments used to be a garage and workshop, where my great granddad built furniture that we still have, and where he raised his chickens.  As a matter of fact, our son named  our apartment in Magnolia Springs "his little white house" when he was a toddler, and when we decided to name this house, it was clear, it would also be "The Little White House" in honor of those special memories.

The Alabama property and homes was a haven and home for family and friends for decades -  so many happy times!
We eventually moved back to Greenville SC once our kids became school aged. (Mark and I were both from Greenville, SC). My mom ended up getting sick and losing her 5 year battle with ovarian cancer during that time.  It never felt the same there without her, it lost it's luster. She had a way of making it so beautiful and welcoming - a home.  Dad sold the house and relocated back to Greenville, SC as well.  Luckily, my cousin and his mom bought the property, so it remains in the family.  We all really missed it though.

Anyway... As soon as we stepped foot here at this house, we felt transported back home. It had the same feel, historical characteristics, the land and trees were the same and we just knew it was a little Magnolia Springs to us - we found our own LITTLE WHITE HOUSE.
Here's a video of that property I found from when dad listed it.  It will tell the story of where we drew our inspiration from.  Although our house isn't quite as fancy, many of the pieces in it were from the original house in Alabama.
